What meditation really does to your brain, according to two striking studies

Two weeks. Thirty minutes a day. That’s all it took for a group of researchers to see something they hadn’t quite expected.
People who practised compassion meditation for two weeks gave away almost twice as much money to a stranger who had been treated unfairly, compared to a control group. Not because they’d decided to be kinder. Their brains had measurably changed.
That’s not the only striking study to appear recently. In late 2025, researchers at Vanderbilt University showed that deliberately following your breath during meditation measurably changes the flow of fluid around the brain, in a direction that resembles what happens during sleep.
Two studies, two very different angles. Not “you feel calmer”, but something more concrete: your behaviour changes and the flow inside your head changes. Below you’ll find what the researchers actually discovered, what it could mean for you, and where the limits of that knowledge lie.

Study one: does following your breath really change the flow inside your head?
In late 2025, researchers at Vanderbilt University published a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), one of the most respected scientific journals in the world.
They weren’t interested in how meditation feels, but in what it does to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid: the fluid that clears waste products out of your brain, part of what’s known as the glymphatic system.
Twenty-three experienced meditators, with an average of well over 3,700 hours of meditation experience, spent two 25-minute sessions in a brain scanner. First while letting their minds wander freely, then while doing focused-attention meditation on their breath, at the tip of the nose and upper lip.
During that focused-attention meditation, the researchers saw three things happen:
- the amount of cerebrospinal fluid flowing back inefficiently dropped by roughly a tenth;
- breathing slowed by about a fifth, and the heart beat somewhat more calmly;
- the slow wave movements of the fluid closer to the brainstem increased, in a pattern that resembles what happens during deep sleep.
What the research shows
- 23 experienced meditators, averaging 3,708 hours of meditation experience
- Cerebrospinal fluid flow dropped from 4.60 to 4.17 ml/min during meditation (p = 0.005, statistically significant)
- Breathing rate dropped from 13 to 10.4 breaths per minute
- Heart rate dropped from 73 to 68 beats per minute

What this actually means for you: you don’t need 3,708 hours of practice to notice that slowing down does something. These meditators showed what happens once your breathing genuinely settles: your body shifts into a state that resembles rest and repair, the same state your body uses overnight to clear out.
That last finding stands out. We’ve known for a while, thanks to a widely cited 2019 study in the journal Science, that cerebrospinal fluid flow increases specifically during deep sleep to clear away waste. This new study suggests your waking brain, through focused attention on the breath, can apparently prompt a similar movement to the one your sleeping brain performs.

Study two: can meditation actually make you more generous?
This may be the most striking meditation study of the past decade, and it isn’t about brain fluid at all, it’s about behaviour.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led by Helen Weng and Richard Davidson, published a 2013 study in the journal Psychological Science on compassion meditation: a practice rooted in metta, or loving-kindness, in which you deliberately direct your attention towards wishing well-being on yourself and others. From loved ones to strangers to people you find difficult.
Forty-one participants were split into two groups. One group did two weeks of compassion meditation, thirty minutes a day. The other, as a comparison, learned a different technique: reappraising their thoughts.
Afterwards, everyone played an economic game where they could choose how much money to give to a stranger who had earlier been treated unfairly by someone else. The group that had practised compassion meditation gave away over one and a half times as much money as the comparison group, and improved the fairness of the split by nearly twice as much.
At the same time, brain scans showed that the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a region involved in attention regulation and weighing rewards, responded more strongly to witnessing another person’s suffering. The connection between this region and the brain’s reward centre had shifted too.
What the research shows

What this actually means for you: these weren’t experienced monks with thousands of hours of practice, just ordinary participants, for two weeks. The effect wasn’t only in how they felt, it was in what they actually did when it counted. Training compassion isn’t a soft, abstract idea, it’s a skill that measurably strengthens with repetition, both in the brain and in behaviour.
What do these studies have to do with the InnerPower Method?
Not because you now have to meditate to “flush out” your brain, or to become a more generous person: neither study claims that, and neither do I. It’s because both point to the same underlying pattern: when you return, with attention, to your breath, your body, or another person’s well-being, something shifts. Not dramatically at first, but measurably, and more so with repetition.
- LAND — letting yourself need nothing for a moment. Sitting down somewhere, feet on the ground, shoulders dropping.
- BREATHE — not directing your breath, but following it. Exactly what the participants in the brain fluid study did.
- FEEL — noticing what’s happening, including what’s happening in someone else, without needing to fix or change it right away. The essence of what the compassion study showed.
The InnerPower Method isn’t a quick trick for the road. It’s a cyclical returning practice: landing, breathing, feeling, again and again, and then carrying on.
Does this work the same way for everyone?
No, and it’s important to say so honestly. Research shows that focused-attention meditation doesn’t land the same way for everyone.
Some people who start with it experience unease, sadness, or a sense of not quite being present, especially when there’s unprocessed tension held in the body. Slowing down can, at first, feel less calm than you’d expect.
Compassion meditation isn’t always an easy practice either. Turning your attention towards another person’s suffering, or towards yourself with kindness, can touch old pain.
If that happens to you, it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means something is asking for attention, and it may be wiser to start with shorter moments, or with guidance, rather than sitting alone in silence for long stretches.
What do these studies actually show, and what don’t they show?
What they do show: in small groups of participants, both cerebrospinal fluid flow and behaviour towards others changed measurably after focused meditation practice.
What they don’t show: that your brain gets “cleaned out” by this, that you automatically become a better person, or that you’ll feel this effect after a single session. Both groups were small, and the researchers themselves note that further research is needed. These are solid, peer-reviewed indications, not proof that meditation is a miracle cure.

A small, practical step for today
You don’t need thousands of hours of practice, or even two weeks, to notice what slowing down does. Pick one of these two exercises, or try both.
Follow your breath (like in the brain fluid study)
- Sit for two minutes, feet firmly on the ground.
- Find the place where your breath is most noticeable, for example the tip of your nose or your belly.
- Follow that spot. Don’t direct it, just follow it.
One line of kindness (like in the compassion study)
- Think of someone you naturally feel warmth for.
- Say to yourself: “I wish that things go well for you.”
- Repeat it once for yourself, and once for someone you found difficult this week.

How often should you meditate to notice a difference?
It depends what you’re looking for. A single calm session can lower your breathing rate and heart rate right away, something you often feel the same day. For lasting changes in behaviour or brain activity, daily practice for at least two to eight weeks is what the research points to. Shorter and more frequent tends to work better than one long session a week.
Can meditation increase anxiety instead of calming you down?
Yes, it can, and research acknowledges this too. Especially for people carrying unprocessed tension, trauma, or a sensitive nervous system, sitting still can bring up unease, sadness, or a sense of disconnection rather than calm. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. Starting short, staying in movement (as in Yin Yoga), or practising with guidance is often a gentler way in than sitting still for long stretches right away.
Does meditation actually help with stress?
Research shows focused-attention meditation can measurably slow breathing and heart rate, two signals linked to a calmer nervous system. That’s no guarantee stress disappears, and it’s not a substitute for addressing the source of the stress, but it is a concrete, evidence-based tool for temporarily bringing your body out of survival mode.
